Roofing - What are the options?

Clay Tile -last 20+ years - has a deserved reputation for being the premium, natural roofing material. "Mission-style" and "Spanish" round-topped tiles are widely used as are flat styles that create German or French looks.     Tile is available in a variety of colors, finishes and shapes, including barrel /mission/, D-shaped, flat and ribbed.      While clay is not cheap it's considered a worthwhile investment. The benefits include: 1/ Durability,   2/Aesthetically pleasing   3/ Natural material which does not fade,   4/ Ideal for all roof scuppers,   5/ Perfect for detailed work, patterning and inter roof designs,   6/ complements a wide range of fittings and accessories......

! Note!  Tile is heavy. If you are replacing another type of roof system with tile, you will need to verify that the structure will support the load.

Concrete Tile -last 20+ years - their development is attributed to Adolph Kroher of Bavaria who, in the 1840s, created his own concrete mix and produced unique tile shapes. Most concrete tiles produced are said be imitations of either clay tiles or slates. They have smooth or sand-faced appearance and are available in a wide range of colors, profiles and textures. .....Apart from their price, the benefits of concrete are: 1/ Strength,   2/ Good acoustic protection,   3/ non-combustible   4/ can withstand extreme temperature of frost and heat,   5/ will not bow, warp or twist under ambient temperature changes,   6/ suitability for a variety of roof pitches

Concrete tiles can, however, discolor over a period of time and my surfer staining from the effects of natural lichen and mosses. The are not, therefore, maintenance-free.

Slate -last 30 to 100 years - is guarded and applied mostly in the northeast and comes in different colors and grades. Considered virtually indestructible, it is, however more expensive than other roofing materials.

Fiber cement slates  - 1/ the perfect "slate look" roof every time without the difficulties of Natural slate,   2/ Quick and easy to install,   3/ choice of installation methods, nail and rivet hook fix,   4/ hardly any wastage of materials when compared to other products,   5/ no need to sort and grade slates,   6/ full range of fittings and accessories available,   7/ available in a range of colors, with no color variation,   8/ fittings available to complement or color mix the slates,   9/ slates are easily cut on site making them ideal for complex roof shapes.

Fiberglass shingles have a fiberglass mat, top-and-bottom layers of asphalt and mineral granules. They are available in architectural grades and a variety of colors that offer a textured appearance.

Wood shingles and shakes- last 10 to 40 years - are typically made from cedar, redwood or southern pine. Shingles are machine-sewn, shakes are hand-hewn and rougher looking. Their natural look is popular but the brush fire limits their use.

Asphalt shingles -last 15 to 20 years - used on an overwhelming share of the U.S. residential roofs. They offer great versatility, color and texture. Asphalt has the ability to conform to complex roof shapes.
